It is often taken to be an abbreviation of Conformité Européenne, meaning "European Conformity".

- Kite Mark: BSI checks for safety and quality of manufacture and Kite mark stamp on the products.
- LPCB (Loss Prevention Certification Board): an internationally recognized certification body offering approvals of fire and security products and services.
- VdS (Vertrauen durch Sicherheit), VdS Schadenverhutung GmbH is an independent testing and certification institution for fire prevention based in Germany. Owned by the German Insurance Association (GDV)
- Intertek: a multinational product Inspecting, Testing & Certifying Company in UK.
- CERTALARM: a quality mark for fire & security; an independent "not for profit" organization certifying the compliance of European products, systems, installation & service standards.
- MED (Marine Equipment Directive): An approval or authorization of equipment and product for Marine Industry.
